I started my marketing career in new home sales for Gehan Homes. Prior to that I was a starving artist and writer forced to get a “real job,” so when I took the marketing gig I thought it would be a compromise. I envisioned spending my time writing copy and making pretty fliers and other artist-adjacent material for the sales team. Ha. Instead, suddenly it was imperative I learn about SEO, PPC, billing, public speaking, and so on, and those pretty flyers I wanted to make were outsourced to a “real graphic designer.”
So long before I had ever sold my first home, I was making million-dollar decisions on real estate brand visibility, but it’s fair to say I had no idea what I was doing. What I did have was a fake-it-till-you-make-it attitude and a veteran team of sales agents on the front lines. Monday morning sales meetings went like this:
“Alright, with a show of hands, who thinks we should spend 200k on Hot On Homes commercials? Anyone know of a place we need a billboard? What do y’all think of the website?”
I learned to listen and ask questions. I bought respectable shoes and did a lot of praying.
It didn’t take long to realize the real money was in sales, so fast forward 22 years. Past 46-million-dollar years where I was #1 in the nation, to burnout seasons where I swore I would never sell another house again and we land here.
Today, I work remote in digital marketing. I spend most of my time auditing businesses’ online visibility and strategizing how to get them seen. The guys I work with are the best of the best. But most of the Realtors, brokers, and lenders I talk to don’t have the budget to hire an agency. So I give a lot of free advice. So much, in fact, that I finally decided to just write it all down.
According to Webster’s Dictionary:
THENCE-adverb
-from that place
-from that time
-from that source or because of
It is a word about movement and consequence. About what comes next because of what came before.
Everything I have learned the hard way, by accident, by prayer, by trial and error, leads here. And from here, thence. It was a natural progression.
